Neofolk band from Minneapolis, US. Now in Brooklyn, New York.
Blood and Sun is dark folk written by Luke Tromiczak and performed by a rotating group of musicians from across the United States.
Formed in 2011, the group has received international praise for its dark, brooding, gothic songwriting. Blood and Sun thematically wrestles with personal tribulations and drive intertwined with metaphysical and pagan currents, delivering soaring and haunting melodies extolling the heroism and tragedy of life, its joyous excess and the vertigo of fate.
Although the music has an ancient sound, its members are personally progressive in their views. The band does not align itself with any hateful thought and is not political in nature. The members of Blood and Sun believe in a world that is equal and empowering to all of its listeners, where individuals of all backgrounds and identities are treated fairly and with respect.
In 2013, Tromiczak relocated from his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota to Brooklyn, New York to pursue his MFA, and continues to write and perform as Blood and Sun across the United States, Canada, and Europe with an ever expanding cast of characters and longstanding friends.

Our Merciless Master
leaves fall under autumns tourniquet and I crushed my love under foot. Gasping awake in dew drenched fields choking new life in dew drench fields. And I plunge through the stars into the womb of the night eyes cut by the sun lips crack in a smile. leaves fall with such clarity and we're crushed in disbelief leaves fall with such clarity and we're crushed in defiant dismay. Shots ring through these hills fate sleeps in these hills. gasping awake in frost lain fields choking awake in crystalline fields tears cut by the sun lips crack with a smile. Our merciless master sings on the breeze Our merciless master laughter laughs on the breeze. Tears cut by the sun and I crushed my love under foot. fate sleeps in these hills flesh torn in a smile
Slaughter the Instant
Soar from the grain to the sea of the sky. Unbound hands caress the blade. Suspend disbelief in the wake of your smile. Shadows burn among flames. The lapping Sun widows all doubts and floods supple skin in auburn glaze. An embrace to banish time. Slaughters the Instant. Dismantles our Chains.
White Storms Fall
How direct is our will? to breakthrough this strife Burning passions decisive as the knife White storms fall as Autumn turns to dust The engulfing flames Blood of life’s lust Moving against gods with Masks of Hate Twisting the crippled life with tears of rape Moving as Gods do hestitate Bursting the Lying Flesh we suffocate How direct is our will? To slaughter this strife Burning passions decisive as the knife White Storms fall as autumn turns to dust The engulfing pyre Blood of life’s lust Moving with gods consumed by hate Burning the crippled life we have unmade Moving as you do hesitate Blooming the Vital Flesh we create
Lyrics : The silence between us became a veil. The frost returned of three winters before. ice sentiments and stone promise. Read in the story of your eyes. Iron twisted and torn rending our dreams. Twilight lays bare our hearts for the kiss of serpent will. The breath between us was a veil disavowal hangs in heavy sheets. Futile frenzy drive and dissolve. What survives the storm of our eyes? This winds embrace tears love from heart. The ice cracks beneath our feet. The kiss of serpent will

So 5 days into the new year I knew I had already been exposed to one of, perhaps my favorite band to come out of Minneapolis in 2012. Kind of early for bold statements, I know. I encourage you to check out Blood and Sun for yourself to see what I am talking about. They recorded a 4 track demo this past December that is limited to 100 copies. Contact the band here if you would like one before they run out. Blood and Sun, Still Pacific and Safewords supported The Rope on this evening.
I believe this was their 2nd, maybe 3rd show ever? I know of one other that happened in December. If you would like to see them live there's a prime opportunity to do so this Thursday the 19th at The Kitty Cat Klub as part of the monthly Perish event. 10pm with no cover.

1 Cain's Orchard
We met again beneath empty glasses The toasts of our past might soon outlast Time that slips beneath fate's long stare Though callous and broken we have shown ourselves bare And I love you my brother so much have we shared Yes we met in Cain's Orchard boughs weighed down From the singing tall grass we lift to the sky once full empty glasses Once full empty glasses To hail all thats passed between time and our lips And give to the Fate's untimely wild grips A toast and a smile our love and our grave It all fades so quickly but never in waste And I love you my brother so much have we shared Yes we met in Cain's Orchard boughs weighed down From the singing tall grass we lift to the sky once full empty glasses Once full empty glasses As night passes us by Until night passes us by
2 Lavender Letters
The cold set in to stone New York Rose petals and lavender letters Leaf by leaf I sent an oak wreath Piece by piece I sent much of me As the days carved deep you said "lets strive together" But (you) meant die apart Oh how sickly sweet your snake whispers can be Bands of gold three were never for me The wind swept through that stone New York Scattering rose petals, burnt lavender letters Your ruby eyes gleam, at dusk you set me free With only a thousand miles to go and a thousand dreams to cleave The snow set in to that stone New York No more rose petals oh those lavender letters Leaf by leaf I sent an oak wreath Piece by piece you had all of me Only a thousand more miles to go And only a thousand more dreams to cleave Like a heart buried outside stone walls I leave my confession with Saint Augustine
3 The Hunt and the Fall
It comes like the hunt; storms rage the night sky Hard is the fall to that dread unknown Swift strike of the blade Stings cruel in your side And in that sharp breath The Chiseled truth of the end
Before the Night's sky gnaw at my bones My root in this world? I've yet to find home A hermit amongst strangers A stone forest in me Nestled in brush fire A snare set in its teeth The hunt and the fall The sea and the end The light in the wound A stone forest in me
From the trees to the plains Fertile fields to dark streets Dust condemns dreams to false deeds
Take this cruel hand Hold fast as it goes Hard is the fall that much we both know Break the nights sky Gnaw at my bones What root in this world? I've yet to know home Take my cruel hand Hold fast as it goes The light in the fall To that great unknown

Quote
With might and heart, Blood and Sun return. With resonant eloquence, Luke Tromiczak and friends plant a new seed into the murky soil of dark folk, birthing the heartfelt new album "Love and Ashes". Nine fresh songs lit a beacon of inspiration and knowledge into the desolate nights of the wilderness, and set a fire ablaze in our hearts, old and new friends alike.
With Tromiczak's commanding baritone leading the way, "Love and Ashes" is lush with passionate drumming, sincere acoustic guitars and beautiful strings, warming your soul in times of darkness. Let the craft of Blood and Sun shine through your very being; welcome it with reverence, and rejoice in its pastoral potential. Reflect on its wisdom, and you shall be rewarded.
Conceived at many different locations, "Love and Ashes" holds a dualistic feeling of home, and of wandering. Though strongly rooted in the American tradition and nature, a sense of universality permeates these nine tracks rich with steadfast chanting and wistful atmospheres. A sense of longing, by which it is most beautiful to get consumed. For this serene yet powerful creation filled with philosophical musings, the sky is the limit.
The recordings were captured from the Green Mountains to the Emerald Triangle, the desert in central Mexico, and the homes in the barren Midwest between. Final mix and mastering Summer Solstice 2019.

Thanks for including FLAC, HuSStla! In this day and age, sharing lossy formats only is not acceptable, in my opinion.
When I first discovered Thayer Cabin through the Wanderer compilation, I went on a quest for other examples of angry dark folk and eventually stumpled upoon Blood and Sun's début album. Really enjoyable, although not as original as Thayer Cabin, but it has a remarkable sound. Love & Ashes is an excellent album too.
