Gealdýr is a Nordic folk/Viking inspired project created by the Dutch Singer-Songwriter and producer Jonathan Barendsma. The name Gealdýr is a combination between the Gaelic word Geal (White) and the Old Norse word Dýr (Deer). Gealdýr's (White deer) music will combine similar kind of ancient folk music elements together to create a very unique and ambient sound based on vocals and ancient traditional instruments from Scandinavia and other Northern European countries. Gealdýr's music is often composed of ideas and stories based on the Viking period, inspired or consisting of Nordic mythology.
Ragnarök. Something has to die to be reborn again.
Ragnarök is an original song inspired by the Poetic Edda. It’s telling the story about the end of life, but also about a new beginning. In the Old Norse way of thinking people have always seen life as a moving cycle. Something has to die to be reborn again.
The song features musician Jiří Hájek on the Tagelharpa and was inspired by the painting Asgårdsreien (The Wild Hunt of Odin) by Peter Nicolai Arbo, painted in 1872.
Originally released in 2018, the song was rereleased in 2019 by Fimbul Records.

Gealdýr’s first album “Sól’’ tells about the creation of this world, the end of it and the rebirth. The ongoing cycle of life. Nowadays most people think that life is very linear, but when we look into Norse mythology we can find that even after Ragnarök (The fate of the Gods) life will continue. The old sun will die and a new one will be born. The old Gods die and after that the world is ready for a new cycle to start.

Quote
The second album by Gealdýr features 7 new tracks created for the motion pictures Valravn and Voluspa. The style of the album can be defined as a mix between Old Norse music and soundtrack.
Vígríðr, meaning ‘battle-surge’, is a large field foretold to host the battle of the Gods as part of the events of Ragnarök. The album explores the sagas which dive deep into the last events of Ragnarök.
Most of the songs on the album are in Old Norse, apart from Wulf Ond Eadwacer and Middangaerd, which are in Old English. These are Gealdýr’s first renditions of Old English literature.
