https://www.discogs.com/release/4689117In the last quarter, Vinyl On Demand released a whole sweep of 10 albums, which in total represent eight LPs + two double LPs, which were delivered to the 250 club members together in a large box. This black box with silver embossing turned out to be a true treasure chest, for whose content you have to spend a lot of time, but in the end enough is paid.Alone, the individual 12 plates in absolutely excellent press quality from their superbly designed covers or lined inner sleeves to slide, is the pure joy and the minimal sound contained in the "golden age" of this genre continues to provide for true delight. Experimentation, impartiality, naivety and great musical moments go hand in hand here and thanks to Vinyl On Demand they are now being snatched away from oblivion. At that time, mostly or almost exclusively, the material was only available on cassettes or even completely unpublished so far, and this is all the more surprising since most of the music sounds absolutely modern or just corresponds to the current zeitgeist. So the compilation "Mutant III" by Kevin Lazar from his only tape + unpublished tracks sounds like a mix of Batcave and Acid-Beat with BAUHAUS vocals.
Later, the Chicago man made a name for himself under the VEKZAR banner as a techno DJ. Peter Becker, on the other hand, is known as the second man behind EYELESS IN GAZA and the LP "Ambivalent Scale Tape Recordings 1979 - 1981" is a selection of 20 tracks of his two cassettes, on which also main band partner Martyn Bates has participated. Another hit is the album "Exile In Paradise" by PLUS INSTRUMENTS, which was a project by the Dutch Truus de Groot and who worked in Manhattan with Lee Renaldo (SONIC YOUTH) and David Linton in the early 80's. From this short-term collaboration was the No Wave cult album "February - April '81" with the hit "Big Man", which was recently released on a French label again on vinyl. The LP on VOD records now contains previously unreleased material, which was then intended partly for the second album and which should appear on the German label What's So Funny About by Alfred Hilsberg.
On the EXPERIMENTAL PRODUCTS from America Vinyl On Demand seem to have eaten a fool, because the complete discography has been documented here on vinyl and CD, as enriched with unpublished material. "Oxide" now includes more demo and live material from the cute synth-pop duo from Philadelphia in the style of the old DEPECHE MODE, OMD or the current THE RORSCHACH GARDEN. The record by Paul Nagle called "The Sooft Room 1980-85" is a compilation of 12 tracks from his many tapes and VOD-Records members also get a CD with the complete first tape "Tree And Leaf". In his work, Paul Nagle has been heavily influenced by the so-called "Cosmic Couriers" TANGERINE DREAM and CLUSTER, which not only has parallels with Ian Boddy, who was also recently honored with a 3LP box on Vinyl On Demand. Olaf Schirm aka SYMBOTER was also influenced by these German music legends, although KRAFTWERK is still a great inspiration and a certain NDW impact in the style of DER PLAN can sometimes not be denied. The LP "Tape Works 80-82" gives now with 12 tracks a representative overview of his three cassette releases in those years. MYSTERY PLANE from England was another band from Gary Ramon (SUN DIAL) in the 80s, whose MODERN ART project and extensive retrospective on VOD Records were recently praised by me in the highest regard. If the sound of MODERN ART was located more in the melodic guitar wave, MYSTERY PLANE are much rougher, punkier to psycho-friendly over, which of course is to be seen in the synth-minimal context. "Curse Of The Bodysnatcher" offers a small selection of the band's relatively many tapes from 1983 to 1986 with 14 tracks, but Vinyl On Demand members also receive an additional single with another 5 tracks.
The double LP of THE DADACOMPUTER also features a bonus single for VOD Recods club members, with the sound reminiscent of an industrial mutant version of KRAFTWERK, or the solo tracks included in the album Members slightly differentiated and varied. The retrospective of Emily Faryna is also a double LP and offers on 4 plates pages the complete discography of the Canadian from the environment of Tara Cross, who incidentally a few years ago was also a very nice box on Vinyl On Demand dedicated. The whole thing is quite well described with No Wave vocals + drum-computer frenzy - absolutely worth discovering. LOS PARANOS from France is one half of the better known duo KLIMPEREI and offers with "Living On A Red Line 83 - 86" a very colorful selection of 17 tracks of his tapes, which can be classified somewhere between synth pop and new wave. All in all, "VOD-Records Presents 80's Minimal.Synth.Wave" is a varied as historical compilation or a true manifesto of the cassette culture of the 80s and Part 2 is already announced for 2014! It should also be noted that most sheets in this box are accompanied by a leaflet with information, if these are not already included on the respective cover backs. The 250 VOD members receive a full certificate to the box, whereas the LPs are separately included in the retail sale.
