The Stargazer's Assistant is the vision of percussionist and visual artist David J. Smith, founder of Guapo and member of the Holy Family, Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses and the Amal Gamal Ensemble. A multi-instrumentalist as well as trained sculptor, Smith began the Stargazer's Assistant as an electroacoustic soundtrack project to score his multimedia exhibitions, which culminated in the 2007 debut The Other Side of the Island. Buoyed by encouragement to continue the project, the prolific Smith elevated the Stargazer's Assistant to another distinct musical entity in his ever-expanding oeuvre, expanding to a trio with the addition of David Knight (Smith's Amal Gamal bandmate and one half of UnicaZürn) and Michael J. York (formerly of Coil and currently of Teleplasmiste and the Utopia Strong). With this lineup, the Stargazer's Assistant released two more albums, 2016's Remoteness of Light and 2018's Resurgam I, Resurgam II via House of Mythology. The Stargazer's Assistant play a hypnotic blend of dark, droning kosmische krautrock with avant-prog chamber music, which has earned them comparisons to Univers Zero, Peter Frohmader, Art Zoyd, and the more abstract moments of Coil and Guapo.
