They are notable for their poetic lyrics and evocative music which are strongly influenced by the native English countryside.

And Also the Trees formed in 1979 in Inkberrow, a small village in Worcestershire, with a lineup featuring two sets of brothers: Simon Huw Jones (vocals), Justin Jones (guitar), Graham Havas (bass) and Nick Havas (drums).

A home demo tape was sent to The Cure, who were looking for support bands on their tour, leading to a friendship between the two bands. In 1981, And Also the Trees played several shows in support of The Cure's UK tour. Their second demo tape, From Under the Hill (1982), was partly co-produced by Robert Smith and Mike Hedges. Graham Havas was replaced at this time by Steven Burrows.

In 1983, the band released their first single, "Shantell", which was produced by The Cure's Lol Tolhurst. Their second single, "The Secret Sea", followed in 1984 and was also produced by Tolhurst. Tolhurst also produced their debut studio album, And Also the Trees, which was released in February 1984. The band received the attention of BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, and were invited to do a session in April 1984, which was produced by Dale Griffin for broadcast on 24 April.

The EP A Room Lives in Lucy (1985) introduced the mandolin-like guitar sound which became their trademark for the next few years. The next album, Virus Meadow (1986), was followed by their first European tour, which yielded the live album The Evening of the 24th (1987). Another EP, The Critical Distance, was released in 1987. The singles "Shaletown" and "The House of the Heart", and the next album The Millpond Years (1988,) were produced by Mark Tibenham.

Farewell to the Shade (1989) was followed by the single releases of "Lady D'Arbanville" (a completely revised Cat Stevens cover) and the French-only "Misfortunes".

In 1990, they changed their management. The band toured America during the following year, and reactivated contact with The Cure, which resulted in the USA-only release of the EP The Pear Tree featuring a remix by Robert Smith and Mark Saunders.

In 1992, the band released their last album produced by Tibenham, Green Is the Sea. They promoted it with a two-leg European tour including Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and France. Fan pressure resulted in a digital remastering of their singles and EPs, and the release of From Horizon to Horizon, a CD collection of primarily single and non-album tracks between 1983–1992.

They issued their sixth studio album The Klaxon in 1993, and the band toured during the following year, which resulted in the release of the live album Le Bataclan and a tour video from a concert in Hamburg.

In 1995, Justin Jones and Tibenham, along with Antonia Reiner, collaborated on a project called G. O. L., which resulted in the release of the album Sensations of Tone and the single "Soma Holiday". The album featured a cover version of the early And Also The Trees song "There Were No Bounds".

The band's seventh studio album, Angelfish (1996), centred on a British perception of Americana. It was the last album with drummer Nick Havas, who was replaced by Paul Hill.

Their eighth studio album, Silver Soul (1998), was also the band's first release on their own eponymous record label. The band released an EP, Nailed, the same year as well as a video compilation, Live 89-98.

After a five-year break, And Also the Trees released Further from the Truth (2003), recorded in the Worcestershire countryside and co-produced with Matthew Devenish.

In 2004 and 2005, And Also the Trees played several shows at music festivals such as the Paleo Festival and Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Germany. They celebrated their 25th anniversary with the Best of 1980–2005 compilation album.

Live in Geneva (2006) showed the band in action on their Further from the Truth tour, as well as some video and film projects. That same year, Justin Jones collaborated with Bernard Trontin of The Young Gods for a project called November, releasing an eponymous album on Swiss label Shayo.

And Also the Trees' 10th album, (Listen For) The Rag and Bone Man, was issued in November 2007. It featured two new members, Ian Jenkins (double bass) and Emer Brizzolara (keyboards, dulcimer and melodica). The accompanying photographs were taken by French photographer Jérôme Sevrette.

In June 2009, the band released When the Rains Come, containing acoustic versions of previously released songs and one new track. This was followed by another acoustic album, titled Driftwood.

In the summer of 2011, the band worked on new material in Herefordshire and France. Later that year, Justin Jones provided guest guitar on the Othon Mataragas album Impermanence (with Marc Almond on vocals, and also featuring Ernesto Tomasini, Laura Moody and Camille O'Sullivan), followed by an intimate concert at London's Chelsea Theatre to launch the album.

The band's 12th studio album, Hunter Not the Hunted, was released in March 2012.

And Also the Trees' 13th album, Born Into the Waves, is set for release on March 18, 2016.

And Also the Trees have been described as a gothic rock group. The band's aesthetic sensibility has also been related to British Romanticism and melancholy in poetry and the arts.

Current lineup
Simon Huw Jones – vocals (1979–present)
Justin Jones – guitar (1979–present)
Steven Burrows – bass guitar (1983–present)
Paul Hill – drums (1997–present)
Emer Brizzolara – keyboards (2007–present)

Past members
Graham Havas – bass guitar (1979-1983)
Nick Havas – drums (1979-1997)
Ian Jenkins – bass guitar, double bass (2007–2015)

Studio albums
And Also the Trees (1984)
Virus Meadow (1986)
The Millpond Years (1988)
Farewell to the Shade (1989)
Green Is the Sea (1992)
The Klaxon (1993)
Angelfish (1996)
Silver Soul (1998)
Further from the Truth (2003)
(Listen For) The Rag and Bone Man (2007)
When the Rains Come (2009)
Driftwood (2011)
Hunter Not the Hunted (2012)
Born Into the Waves (2016)

EPs
The Secret Sea (1984)
A Room Lives in Lucy (1985)
The Critical Distance (1987)
Shaletown (1987)
The House of the Heart (1988)
Lady D'Arbanville (1989)
The Pear Tree (1989)
Nailed (1998)
And Also the Trees (2009)

Singles
"Shantell"/"Wallpaper Dying" (1983)
"The Secret Sea"/"Secrecy" (1984)
"Shaletown"/"Needle Street" (1987)
"The House of the Heart"/"This Ship in Trouble (Instrumental)" (1988)
"Lady D'Arbanville"/"The Street Organ" (1989)
"Misfortunes"/"Belief in the Rose (Instrumental)" (1989)

Live albums
The Evening of the 24th (1987)
Le bataclan (1994)
Prémonition hors série (1991; EP)

Compilation albums
A Retrospective 1983–1986 (1986)
Et aussi les arbres (1987)
Boxed Set (1990)
From Horizon to Horizon (Singles 1983–92) (1993)
1980–2005 (2005)

Demo albums
First demo cassette (1980)
From Under the Hill (1982)

Video albums
Bielefeld PC69 May 1st 1992 (1994)
Live 89-98 (1998)
Live in Geneva (2006)

Links: Wiki | OffSite | Discogs | LastFM | FaceBook | MySpace

The group's pioneering music made use of minimalist electronic instrumentation and primitive drum machines, and their early performances were confrontational and often ended in violence. They were among the first groups to use the phrase punk music in an advertisement for a concert in 1970.

Though never widely popular among the general public, Suicide have been recognized as among the most influential acts of their era: Rolling Stone called them "an unmeasurable influence on the industrial dance, noise, techno, ambient, and electronic scenes of the 1980s and 1990s." AllMusic wrote that their eponymous 1977 debut album "provided the blueprints for post-punk, synth pop, and industrial rock."

History

Suicide took its name from the title of a Ghost Rider comic book titled Satan Suicide, a favorite of Alan Vega. Rev's simple keyboard riffs, (initially played on a battered Farfisa organ combined with effects units, before changing to a synthesizer), were accompanied by primitive drum machines, providing a pulsing, minimalistic, electronic backdrop for Vega's murmuring and nervy vocals. It was the first band to use the term punk to describe itself, which the band had adopted from an article by Lester Bangs. Some of the band's earliest posters use the terms punk music and punk music mass.

Suicide emerged alongside the early glam punk scene in New York, with a reputation for its confrontational live shows. Many of the band's early shows were at the Mercer Arts Center, alongside bands such as the New York Dolls and Eric Emerson and the Magic Tramps. David Johansen once played harmonica with Suicide in an early show there. Vega and Rev both dressed like arty street thugs, and Vega was notorious for brandishing a length of motorcycle drive chain onstage. Vega once stated "We started getting booed as soon as we came onstage. Just from the way we looked they started giving us hell already." This sort of audience confrontation was inspired by Vega's witnessing of an Iggy and the Stooges concert at the New York State Pavilion in August 1969, which he later described as "great art". After the collapse of the Mercer Arts Center in 1973, Suicide played at Max's Kansas City and CBGB, often sharing the bill with emerging punk bands. Their first album was reissued with bonus material, including "23 Minutes Over Brussels", a recording of a Suicide concert that deteriorated into a riot.

The band's first album, Suicide (1977), was released independently on Red Star Records. Although initial press reviews were divided (with Rolling Stone in particular giving it a scathing review), media recognition has changed over the years. One critic writes: "'Che", "Ghost Rider"—these eerie, sturdy, proto-punk anthems rank among the most visionary, melodic experiments the rock realm has yet produced." Of note is the ten-minute "Frankie Teardrop", which tells the story of a poverty-stricken 20-year-old factory worker pushed to the edge. Critic Emerson Dameron writes that the song is "one of the most terrifying, riveting, absurd things I’ve ever heard." Nick Hornby in his book 31 Songs described "Frankie Teardrop" as something you would listen to "only once".

Suicide's albums of the late 1970s and early 1980s have now become regarded as some of the most influential recordings of their time and helped shape the direction of indie rock, industrial music, and dance music. Among others, Steve Albini (Shellac, Rapeman, Big Black), Panthére, Gang Gang Dance, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Sisters of Mercy, She Wants Revenge, Henry Rollins, Joy Division/New Order, Soft Cell, Nick Cave, D.A.F., Erasure, the music of Giant Haystacks, The KLF, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, OMD, Pet Shop Boys, Tears for Fears, Cassandra Complex, Mudhoney, Nitzer Ebb, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Radiohead, Kap Bambino, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Angel Corpus Christi (covers of Dream Baby Dream and Cheree with Alan Vega guest vocals), Michael Gira, MGMT, Sky Ferreira, Sonic Boom, Loop, The Fleshtones (both of whom have recorded cover versions of "Rocket USA"), Ric Ocasek of The Cars, Mi Ami, Depeche Mode, Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, R.E.M., Devo, Ultravox, Massive Attack, Air, Autechre, The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Aphex Twin and The Kills, Bono Vox and Bruce Springsteen have all listed Suicide as an influence. Bruce Springsteen was also influenced by the band, as evident by the song "State Trooper" from his album Nebraska. Furthermore, Springsteen also used a solo keyboard version of "Dream Baby Dream" to close the concerts on his 2005 Devils & Dust Tour, and released a studio version of his cover on his 2014 album High Hopes.

In 1986, Alan Vega collaborated with Andrew Eldritch of The Sisters of Mercy on the 'Gift' album, released under the name of 'The Sisterhood'. Vega and Rev have both released solo albums, and Suicide released their first album in over a decade with 2002's American Supreme. Sales, however, were slow and critical reception was mixed.

In 2005, SAF Publishing put out Suicide No Compromise, a "docu-biography" by David Nobahkt, which featured extensive interviews with Vega and Rev as well as many of their contemporaries and famous fans.

In 2008, Blast First Petite released a monthly, limited edition series of 10" Vinyl EP's and downloads by major artists, honoring Alan Vega's 70th birthday. Among those paying tribute were Bruce Springsteen, Primal Scream, Peaches, Grinderman, Spiritualized, The Horrors, +Pansonic, Julian Cope, Lydia Lunch, Vincent Gallo, LIARS, & The Klaxons. The label also released "Suicide: 1977–1978", a 6 CD box-set, the same year.

In September 2009, the group performed their debut LP live in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties-curated Don't Look Back series.

In May 2010 the band performed the entire first album live at two London concerts, double billed with Iggy & The Stooges performing Raw Power.

Alan Vega died on July 16, 2016 at the age of 78. His death was announced by musician and radio host Henry Rollins, who shared an official statement from Vega's family on his website.

Covers

The riff from "Ghost Rider" was sampled extensively in M.I.A.'s single, "Born Free", released in April 2010.

In mid-2009, the band The Horrors released a cover of the song "Shadazz" as part of a tribute to Alan Vega and his work. They've performed it many times live, along with another Suicide song, "Ghost Rider". Later that year, Primal Scream and Miss Kittin covered the song "Diamonds, Fur Coat, Champagne" for a limited-edition 10-inch vinyl pressing. A total of 3,000 copies were pressed and released on March 30, 2009.

"Ghostrider" was covered by the garage punk band The Gories and released on the Cheapo Crypt Sampler No. 2

In April 2011, the influential dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem used a snippet from "Ghost Rider" during the song "Losing My Edge" and covered the Alan Vega solo effort "Bye Bye Bayou" during their final concert, held in a sold-out Madison Square Garden.

In April 2012, Neneh Cherry released a cover of the song "Dream Baby Dream" which appeared on her album, The Cherry Thing.

In May 2014, Savages released a live cover of "Dream Baby Dream" on the b-side of their single Fuckers/Dream Baby Dream 12".

Discography

Studio albums

1977 – Suicide
1980 – Suicide: Alan Vega and Martin Rev
1988 – A Way of Life The 2005 Blast First/Mute/EMI CD reissue has a slightly different mix of the album, most notably the song "Surrender", and includes a live bonus disc recorded in 1987. Cat Power was originally the name of Marshall's first band, but has become her stage name as a solo artist.

Born in Atlanta, Marshall was raised throughout the southern United States, and began performing in local bands in Atlanta in the early 1990s. She was discovered opening for Liz Phair in 1994 by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar, with whom she recorded her first two albums, Dear Sir (1995) and Myra Lee (1996), on the same day in 1994. In 1996 she signed with Matador Records, and released a third album of new material with Shelley and Foljahn, What Would the Community Think. Following this she released the critically acclaimed Moon Pix (1998), recorded with members of Dirty Three, and The Covers Record (2000), a collection of sparsely-arranged cover songs.

After a brief hiatus she released You Are Free (2003), featuring guest musicians Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder, followed by the soul-influenced The Greatest (2006), recorded with numerous Memphis studio musicians. A second album of cover tracks, Jukebox, was released in 2008. In 2012 she released the self-produced Sun, which debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200, the highest charting album of her career to date.

Critics have noted the constant evolution of Cat Power's sound, with a "mix of punk, folk and blues" on her earliest albums, and elements of soul and other genres more prevalent in her later material. Her 2012 album Sun incorporated electronica, in a self-proclaimed move from the "slower" guitar-based songs she initially wrote for the album.

Website | Facebook

The Daysleepers are a self-release band Rain Delay Music, an independent shoegaze record label. The goal is to create a huge volume of recordings in which the band will have complete control and rights to. The Daysleepers Debut EP "Hide Your Eyes" (December 2005) won the band many fans around the world (selling out the first pressing), and praise from shoegaze legends such as Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead of Slowdive. It also hit 1 for several weeks on the Tonevendor (Renowned Shoegaze Distributor) top 20 record sales list. In October 2006 The Daysleepers released their 2nd EP "The Soft Attack". This EP shows a heavier side of the bands sound, with etheriel guitars spinning way into outerspace, and vocal melodies that hauntingly soar to new heights. Their first full album "Drowned in a Sea of Sound" was released in May 2008 and builds on their earlier music while retaining their trademark vocals, drums, and density of sound.

Facebook | Bandcamp

Born in Stockholm, Sweden. On stage they are accompanied by a band.

Their songs often feature harmony vocals and could be described as folk, country or americana.
Their career started notably early in their lives, when their independently produced songs quickly gained popularity on MySpace and the radio in Sweden. Signed to Rabid Records during 2008 where they released their debut EP. Then signed to Wichita Recordings. From March 2014 with Sony's Columbia Records. Of note are also their tributes to classic artists like Leonard Cohen and Emmylou Harris.

The duo's father is Benkt Svensson, a well-known artist in Sweden himself, who was a major help in the start of the band including producing their records and managing tours.

Website | Facebook

The band consists of Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, Nat Walker, and Johnny Jewel. Chromatics' early recordings were considered lo-fi, but their 2006 "In The City" EP introduced a more electronic sound, and 2007's Night Drive and 2012's Kill For Love were both critically-acclaimed albums. Her formative influences range from classical composers such as Johan Sebastian Bach and Hans Zimmer, to modern day Pop & RnB pillars like Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5. Cutting her teeth in a gypsy jazz improv troupe from Ybor City, Taylor’s unique original music and eclectic covers connect with her listeners on a human level while elevating any space and exposing beauty and hope through new perspective.
Facebook

One can also conclude it from their one-liner promo-text - "If you own a '64 Chevrolet Impala, dark as the night you drive in, then by law in continual motion we belong". The few who have witnessed the band live have described their delightful experience with comparisons to the likes of The Brian Jonestown Massacre or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club; as some of low quality YouTube-clips of their gigs remind the moods of Aki Kaurismäki movies and their soundtracks. During their short existence Holy Motors have already played as warm-up to a well-known American indie rock group Sic Alps at their gig in Tallinn and have also performed at Tallinn Music Week showcase in 2013.
Facebook
